This is mainly just a link.  I just figure that anyone who hasn't read anything about it already should learn about the kinds of thing that went on during the Republican National Convention.  Didn't there used to be something like the "right to public assembly?" No, sorry, I apoligize, that was thoughtcrime on my part.

I figured this would be a good topic for my first journal posting (since I've essentially just been lurking here for awhile).  Just all the things that have been going on in the states, especially recently with the Republican National Convention; like how things were manipulated so that U.S. soldiers could attend (warning: this link is to a kuro5hin article, this might be blasphemy on my part ;)

Well, that's all I've got for now.

17 year old pimply faced caucasian nerds crying about the sky falling isn't the same thing as "news". But I get the point, Republicans are Evil[tm], you don't like Evil Republicans[tm]. Hooray for you and your high horse!

It's more "cops and jail are unpleasant" than "Republicans are evil." It's a bit whiny, but they have a good point...1800+ arrested, how many charged?

[ Parent ]

I didn't read it by MohammedNiyalSayeed (3.00 / 0) #3 Wed Sep 15, 2004 at 12:17:01 PM EST

And I won't. The URL sums it up. I know that crowd a little too well for my liking, and their politics and oppression polemics are painfully predictable. As for the arrests, ultimately, who cares? Those who got arrested, and those who think walking down the street carrying a sign is going to adjust anything, and that's pretty much it. Tying the policies implemented by NYPD to keep a city moving to some erosion of rights caused by the Evil Republicans[tm] is sloppy logic, and typical of the script kiddies referenced in the URL.

The wookie has no clothes. And is a likely pedophile.

It's not about Republicans. It's seriously only about the arrests. I mean, I don't care whether you read it or not, but your "sloppy logic" charge is completely unfounded.

I agree about the wookie, though...keep that thing away from my kids!

I see the source of confusion by MohammedNiyalSayeed (5.00 / 1) #6 Wed Sep 15, 2004 at 12:36:40 PM EST

My "republicans are evil" jibe was directed at the author of the diary, and pertain to the text as a whole, not the specific article at 2600. Which, sadly, I just read three pages of. I've been to jail, alone, and not charged with anything, and it's a lot worse than what those whiners experienced. At least they had friends there. But compared to mommy and daddy's basement, it was probably pretty uncomfortable for them. Regardless, until MI-5 does a cavity search on *them*, they're not getting any sympathy from me for having to stand around on a pier for a few hours.

1) Person A underwent possibly illegal hardship
2) I underwent possibly illegal hardship that was worse
3) Therefore there is no need to see if and how much Person A's hardship was illegal

  1. People are often exposed to hardship, 'legal' and 'illegal' (whatever you mean by that).
  2. Here is a story of a person's exposure to hardship.
  3. Yes, he experienced hardship. That's unfortunate. And something we all will probably experience at some point.

Don't get me started on 'wrong place, wrong time' or 'right to be there' angles. Everybody made the decisions they made. It happened. It was reported. Fin.

s/need/interest/g by MohammedNiyalSayeed (6.00 / 1) #12 Wed Sep 15, 2004 at 12:58:07 PM EST

Let me explain this to you: I know the 2600 crowd intimately. Do you? I've known them for upwards of 9 years now. Have you? I consider my inside perspective to give me an advantage in dismissing the potential interest I may or may not have in reading their drivel, partially because I know them, and partially because I know me, and have known me for 35 years.

So what was your point, then?

I guess I didn't realize that this was a story of a raid to their very own basements and not just a story that happened to be reported (or hosted by) them but about regular New Yorkers.

Eric Corley is not a regular New Yorker. by MohammedNiyalSayeed (3.00 / 0) #21 Wed Sep 15, 2004 at 04:12:54 PM EST

He's the self-righteous over-privileged son of well-to-do yard residents who has made a career of self-aggrandizement, and markets himself to maladjusted teens and pre-teens, clinging desparately to the idea that they're not just *weird*, they're *special*. Making vague associations with people he is in no way a peer of, he's managed to build a tiny little empire which prevents him from a) having to work, and b) having to deal with the humility of taking money from mommy and daddy. Having had in-depth person to person conversations with him, as well as countless wasted hours of IRC, I know enough about him to know that reading his socio-political self-martyring diatribe is, for me, a waste of time.

So, do you have something to add about him that maybe I'm overlooking, or are you just going to go the route of a snide, sarcastic ad hominem?

Oh, and in case you didn't know, Corley is the author of the piece in question, though he wrote it under his "hacker name".

Also, in effect, your response to said comment was to choose option two, and deliver a snide ad hominem. Admittedly, you left out the sarcasm that time, but 666.7 isn't a bad batting average, is it?

The wookie isn't capable of stealing anyone's ops. And I have no long-standing beef with him, I just discount his ranting, because it's disingenuous and absurd.

I'll describe it as Bukowski might; I don't hate the wookie, I just feel better when he's not around.
